Szechenyi Chain Bridge Budapest - Lánchíd

Bridging the mighty Danube directly in front of the Four Seasons Hotel in Pest and the Buda Var district across the water is the huge wrought iron structure of the Lanchid; more commonly referred to as the 'chain bridge'.
Count Istvan Szechenyi dreamed of linking the two sides together rather than relying on ferries and pontoons but sadly never got to see the finished realisation of his thoughts as he died in solitude at an asylum outside of the city walls.
Designed by the Scotsman William Clark and built by Adam Clark (no relation) in the late 1800s this structure is a series of vast links held together and supported by two large brick stanchions (hence the 'chain' reference in the name).
Destroyed during the Second World War as a means of halting the advancements of the Russians it was rebuilt to the exact specifications of the original and is certainly the most impressive of the bridges that Budapest has to offer.
Although predominantly a road traffic bridge it does have two separate sides for pedestrians and 'cyclists' that afford visitors serene views along the river and is a hot spot for romantics young and old who wish to slow down their world for a few minutes and enjoy beautiful Budapest in the arms of their partner.
On occasions the bridge is shut to traffic and you can enjoy a sedate stroll along a wider path. The bridge is also an amazing vantage point to watch the Red Bull air race from, although it is definitely not for the faint-hearted as the planes will fly directly at the bridge before climbing steeply or dropping underneath the bridge.
Once you have crossed the bridge into Buda you will find yourself at Adam Clark Ter from where you can walk along the river, stride up to the castle area or take the funicular to the top of Varhegy (Castle Hill); what ever you choose you'll be sure to find some more exciting features of this amazing city.
